Esther: The God Who Is Present — A Study of the Apocryphal Additions

Textual Background:

The Greek additions to Esther survive in several manuscript traditions. Some include a fuller form of Mordecai’s prayer, where he calls upon the Lord as the God of Abraham and the patriarchs. 

Modern translations such as the NEB follow these fuller Greek witnesses.The KJV translators (1611) used a more limited Greek tradition that omits this covenant formula.

Because the NEB is copyrighted, its exact wording cannot be reproduced here. The prayer provided in this study is therefore taken from the public-domain KJV Apocrypha, which does not contain the “God of Abraham” line found in other Greek manuscripts.
