In John 3, his letter stipulates that Gaius accommodated preachers. The commentary states in 3 John 6, "These people have spoken of what Gaius has done before the church, so that his deeds were widely known. John commends his practice:" You would do well to send them on their journey. As befits God's service is rather 'worthwhile' to God's. It is God who is the standard, not His servants (cf. Jn. 13:20). 7 The wandering preachers have accepted nothing from the heathen. This might have compromised their message and they would not do it. It made them all the more dependent on men like Gaius. 8 There is an obligation (we ought is 'we owe it') resting on believers to support such men. That (Gk. Hina) denotes purpose. The duty in question is not merely in hospitality, but is in order that we may set forward divine purposes in being fellow works in the truth".- Guthrie, D., et al., editors. The New Bible Commentary Revised. WM. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids, MI, 1953, pg 1273.

I would like to emulate this example as closely as possible. When individuals contribute money to the box filled with free items in my absence, it is considered a voluntary offering. If there is an opportunity for Christian hospitality beyond campsites and the wilderness, then we give thanks to the Lord. I appreciate and seek support from those who have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ so the gospel message continues to be preached and given out.
